The Labor Department, stating that the
current minimum wage and overtime pay laws are antiquated, is
seeking to revamp the standards for paying overtime pay.
Currently, overtime pay must be paid at an hourly rate of
time-and-a-half for each hour worked in a week over 40 hours.
Exemptions from paying overtime are only available for employees
who meet stringent criteria based on salary, management,
administrative and other responsibilities. The AFL-CIO and other
labor unions are afraid the change would hurt workers since the
overtime pay requirements help limit excessive work hours.
